Bizarre Foods

When talking about food we first think about these delicious dishes old granny cooked for the family, or that fancy restaurant dad uses to invite the whole family. The last issue you imagine to see on your plate is a tarantula! you have heard it a big, hairy tarantula well roasted and with a soft lemon sauce.

This is the main job that our invited chef Andrew Zimmern is keen on. His show "Bizarre food" focuses on regional cuisine from around the world that is usually perceived by most of us as disgusting, exotic or weird.

In each episode, Andrew focuses on the cuisine of a country or region in particular. It usually shows the restaurant, where it is served, and, so general without hesitation, he eats it, YUMMY!.

Take a look at his top ten favorites of all time:

• ·         Balut – Philippines

This particular food is a fertilized duck egg. The egg is allowed to enter the embryonic stage and then is boiled. The item is very popular all over Southeast Asia and particularly, the Philippines where Andrew was made to taste it.

• ·         Fried tarantulas – Cambodia

The natives showed him their recipe and proceeded to deep fry them. Watching Andrew  as they're being fried amidst sounds that can only be compared to a choo choo train, you're not sure which way he'll go. But as he bites down into one, he raves about how good it is.

• ·         Donkey skin – China

The Chinese are actually quite famous for using many different sorts of animals to cook their authentic street food, camel's hump, amphibians and reptiles as well, and even donkey are actually quite popular. In the case of the donkey, the skin in particular is extensively used and it couldn't please Andrew more, as he is a definite fan of the many dishes made from it.

• ·         Coconut Tree Grubs  - Peru

In the heart of the Amazon jungle in Iquitos, locals harvest coconut tree grubs and sell them in the market skewered and charred over an open flame. These protein-rich grubs taste like crisp rolls of charred chicken skin if they are cooked properly. If not, they taste like pus bags filled with rotted digested wood.

And these delicacies, my friends are some of regular dishes Andrew Zimmern loves eating, he says “travel the more you can, speak with people in the way, learn from every experience you have and if it looks good …. EAT IT!”
